Who We Are

Alan Rudge : Architect

Following his local education in Nambucca Heads and Macksville, Alan Rudge completed his tertiary architectural studies at Sydney’s New South Wales Institute of Technology (1979). During this part-time degree, considerable varied experience was gained in the Sydney offices of John Andrews International and the NSW Government Architect (Public Works Department).

Alan Rudge Architects (ARA) has operated offices in Sydney, along the NSW north coast and in the Nambucca Valley since 1979 and during the 1980’s as Sydney-based “Arudgenal Design” at Chippendale and Potts Point.

The 1980’s saw Alan’s first foray into the hospitality industry as a Qantas steward (1980-88). With architect’s offices “up the track” in London, Singapore and Honolulu, and generous stand-down time, it was relatively easy to continue the practice of architecture - albeit with direct international access to other architects, seminars, documents and examples of the world’s best buildings – from Japan to USA, from Europe to the Middle East, Asia and beyond.

After relocating full-time to Nambucca Heads in 1992, ARA’s work with local projects such as Macksville’s Recreation Centre, the Nambucca River Co-Op, Nambucca Town Library and numerous private residential commissions established the firm as the Nambucca Shire’s ‘Local Architects’.

With the design and construction of The V-Wall Tavern in 1994 began Alan’s second stint in hospitality as a publican and restaurateur (1994-2005).

As ‘Australia’s only architect-publican’, ARA continued to operate full-time through the 1990’s and into the new millennium.

Many hospitality projects during this period saw work undertaken on the new Golden Sands Tavern (1999), Woollahra Golf Club (2007), as well as specialised heritage projects such as the Federal Hotel, Alstonville (2004) and The Star Hotel, Macksville (2008).

With over 45years’ experience in all things architectural, but with respected expertise in hospitality, residential, commercial, medium-density, heritage and sustainable-design architecture, Alan Rudge Architects is particularly well-suited to assist you with your next project.
